The Unspoken Fears

July had no idea what was on Chansel’s mind. A few months into their marriage, she still couldn’t read her husband’s mind. She learned more about him. But when it came to what he was thinking, that was something July had yet to figure out.

She couldn’t figure out why Chansel wanted to go to Elliot’s house. These two guys didn’t like each other. Talking to each other was weird enough. And Chansel was thanking Elliot for something.

“What were you and Elliot talking about?” July asked as their car stopped at a red light.

Chansel, who had been concentrating on driving, turned to her. “It was about you.”

“Me?” July pointed at herself. “Why talk to Elliot about me? Why not ask me?”

Chansel sighed. “Because I needed another perspective.”

“But you have me. Why do you need another point of view?”

July tried to stay calm, even though her heart was racing. Her free hand went to her stomach. If there was a discussion with Elliot about her, it might have something to do with her pregnancy.

“Because this isn’t just about you, sweetheart. It’s about us.”

July looked down. Her grip tightened as her breath raced. She wasn’t overthinking anything, but today she felt like she was carrying a heavy burden. Maybe it was the effect of the pregnancy, or maybe she was just sad.

“This is about my pregnancy, isn’t it?” July finally asked.

“You’re right.”

Chansel’s answer hurt her. July understood that Chansel was still afraid. He had some trauma related to pregnancy, children, or something. His future nephew died, followed by his sister. That made Chansel blame himself. So when Sarah lied to him about being pregnant, he probably had enough.

She could understand all this. She wanted to understand and ease her husband’s feelings. But could a fetus already in her womb be thrown away? She didn’t want to kill her own flesh and blood.

“I know you’re not ready for this, honey. But…” The hand on her stomach tightened even more.

“It’s not about that, darling.”

“Then what is it?” July interjected. “Our child, and I can’t get rid of it, I…”

July couldn’t finish her words because her tears were already overflowing. Chansel didn’t answer or comfort her. He drove off in the car without saying a word and parked it on a quiet street.

“Honey, don’t cry again, okay?” Chansel reached out and wiped the tears from July’s cheek.

“You can’t handle this pregnancy, can you?”

“It’s not about that, honey. I don’t blame you at all for this unplanned pregnancy. I’m half to blame, too.”

“But this pregnancy is not a mistake. Our child is not a mistake.”

Chansel exhaled. “Yes, it’s not a mistake. Okay, I misspoke; forgive me.”

July knew that crying and being sad were not good for her baby. But she couldn’t hold back the sadness, and she wanted to cry anyway. She wanted to be upset, angry, and pouty all at once.

“Shall we go to the obstetrician?”

Chansel wouldn’t ask her to have an abortion, would he?

July wanted to erase all those negative thoughts, but somehow she couldn’t.
